about Zoë :
Zoë May is a Melbourne-based designer whose creative practice includes fashion design, knitwear development and illustration. Her current work focuses heavily on fully-fashioned knitwear, zero-waste design and upcycling techniques.
Zoë grew up by the coast in regional NSW, which cemented her passion for community and environmental concerns. Her work is expressive and experimental with a nostalgic mood and joyful, saturated colour combinations.
Zoë's fashion design journey began with her own self-funded and handmade knitwear and accessories label - a project she still runs seasonally 5 years on. A year-long studio assistant role with local ethical fashion label Dominique Healy further influenced her passion for low waste design and working with independent Australian brands.
In 2021 she graduated RMIT with a Bachelor of Fashion Design (Honours) and began working with local fashion labels as a freelance knitwear developer.
Named a prize winner in the 2019 Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show, Zoë has developed a love for the installation process and involving community in her work. In the 2020 lockdown, she produced a streetwear collection entirely from waste fabric and damaged clothing donated contact-free from members of the Brunswick community - a project which continues to influence her work and research in purpose driven design.
Zoe’s current graduate collection was awarded the Australian Wool Education Trust Scholarship for advanced design propositions in wool garment types, and was one of 20 RMIT graduates shown at Melbourne Fashion Week. She looks forward to growing this project into her own locally produced, zero-waste knitwear label.
